Book Review: Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom
3 Main Takeaways:
- Control or Catastrophe: Once AI surpasses human intelligence, controlling it will be nearly impossible. Bostrom warns that even a tiny misalignment in objectives could lead to disastrous consequences, like a genie twisting wishes in the worst way possible.
- The Intelligence Explosion: Bostrom outlines the idea of an 'intelligence explosion,' where AI rapidly self-improves beyond human comprehension. If we aren't prepared, we could be handing over the keys to a force that sees us as irrelevant-or worse, in the way.
- We're Not Ready: Bostrom argues that humanity isn't close to ready for superintelligence. While we're racing ahead in developing powerful AI, we're crawling when it comes to ethical guidelines, safety measures, and understanding the full implications.
Final Thoughts:
It's a great book that inspired me to read his most known paper called 'are you living in a computer simulation?'. Will definitely read again at some point.
